Lactose Intolerance: What Is It And How Is It Diagnosed?

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dr._Scot_Lewey] Dr. Scot Lewey Lactose, commonly known as milk sugar, may not be digested well if you are either born with absent or low levels of the enzyme lactase or if your intestine has been injured resulting in absent or low levels of lactase. Lactose is a disaccharide or two sugars linked. It is a combination of the two sugars, glucose and galactose. If intestines lack or are deficient in lactase you will not adequately digest lactose and you will experience gas, bloating, abdominal cramps and diarrhea shortly after eating something containing lactose. The lactase enzyme is on the surface of the intestine cells where it is very vulnerable to intestinal injury. Some people are born with absent or low levels of lactase, therefore have congenital alactasia or hypolactasia. Between 80-100% of people of Asian, Native American, or African ancestry are lactose intolerant for this reason compared to only 15% of those of Northern European ancestry. Secondary or acquired lactose intolerance can develop after any injury of the small intestine. Common causes include infection (e.g. after severe stomach flu or gastroenteritis), medication (e.g. chemotherapy), radiation, malnutrition, food intolerance (e.g. Celiac disease) or overgrowth of bad bacteria. The intestine may be temporarily damaged and recover tolerance for lactose. Permanent or ongoing damage can result in prolonged intolerance similar to congenital lactose intolerance. The levels of lactase enzymes are highest in young children and diminish with time, often by teenage years when symptoms may become prominent. Lactose intolerance is commonly diagnosed based on a history of symptoms of gas, bloating, abdominal pain or cramps and diarrhea that occur within minutes to a couple of hours of ingestion of dairy products. Since lactose can be in other foods not considered dairy, some people may not recognize a pattern that they associate with lactose. Others may be misdiagnosed as having irritable bowel syndrome. The diagnosis is made formally by either a hydrogen breath test or lactose tolerance test. Measuring hydrogen in the breath after ingestion of lactose that has been radio labeled or marked with a detectable carbon fragment is known as the hydrogen breath test. Lactose tolerance tests measure several blood sugar levels after ingestion of lactose looking for absence of an expected normal rise. Though a biopsy of the intestine can test for presence of the enzyme, this is expensive, invasive and rarely available outside of research labs. Non-specific tests such as stool acidity test (pH) or lactose challenge are commonly utilized along with a clinical history and a trial of a lactose free diet to make the diagnosis. The stool is normally neutral to alkaline in pH unless sugars are fermented in the intestine or excessively acidic foods or beverages are ingested. Maldigested lactose fermented by bacteria in the intestine produces acid and lowers the stool pH. Stool pH can be easily and inexpensively measured. However, a low or acidic stool pH is not specific for lactose intolerance since other maldigested sugars can be fermented resulting in increased stool acidity. Lactose challenge is simply eating or drinking high lactose containing foods or drinks and noting the presence or absence of symptoms. The poor mans lactose challenge is ingesting a quart of skim milk. Fat slows emptying of the stomach and delays the delivery of food or drink to the small intestine. Skim milks lack of significant fat permits rapid passage from the stomach to small intestine of a large load of lactose. If someone is lactase deficient they will have rapid onset of symptoms of bloating, gas, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. The absence of any of these symptoms after a quart of skim milk makes lactose intolerance very unlikely. Lactose intolerance treatment involves avoiding lactose-containing foods, not just dairy, since many other foods have lactose added. Alternatively, lactase enzymes may be taken with or just before eating lactose containing foods but their effectiveness is somewhat limited. Lactose free milk may also be used. Individuals who do not have conditions that affect the intestine, intestinal damage or fit the usual ethnic pattern associated with lactose intolerance that have lactose intolerance or symptoms suggestive of lactose intolerance should be screened for Celiac disease. This common condition is frequently missed and when untreated is highly associated with lactose intolerance. One study noted that 24% of people with lactose intolerance had undiagnosed Celiac disease and lactose intolerance was their only manifestation of Celiac disease. Lactose intolerance is common. It may cause bloating, gas, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. The symptoms may be misdiagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome. Celiac disease commonly causes lactose intolerance. Many lactose intolerant people have undiagnosed Celiac disease. Wedding Budgeting Tips

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Shawn Hickman Your wedding dress: Start shopping right away. You won’t feel rushed or pressured into buying something, and you’ll be able to shop smart. Simple plain dresses are usually less expensive then the ones with lace, pearls/beads etc.. You could buy a plain dress and add lace, beads etc.. yourself. Or get someone to do it for you. Rent or borrow a dress. If you like your mother`s, sister`s or friends dress ask them if you could borrow it. But don`t be offended if they refuse as a wedding dress is very sacred to most women. Look around second hand shops/charity shops. You`ll be surprised at the amount they get given, and they are usually inexpensive. The venue: Book the ceremony/reception well in advance you may be able to negotiate a better price then you would if you left it to the last minute. Have your wedding on off-peak months. November to April rates will probably be reduced. Christmas weddings are more expensive though so if you are planning a Christmas wedding you will have to cut your finances. Instead of a grand ballroom or banquet hall, think less-expensive venues, like publicly owned buildings and parks, registry office, the church or temple hall, the backyard, the beach, a restaurant’s private room. You may have to get a permit to marry in a public place, but it will be less than a private banquet room. Catering: Look around for caterers. Get different quotes before you decide on one. Choose cheaper entrees, like prawns instead of lobster, vegetables like broccoli instead of asparagus will cut the cost, too. Cut down on courses. If you’re having a cocktail hour, do you really need an appetizer course? Do you need soup and salad? Instead of waiter service, have a buffet bar. Think ethnic! Mexican, Indian, Italian, or Chinese food is fun and much cheaper per person than the traditional wedding menu. See if your favorite restaurant caters. If you are having a themed wedding create your menu around the theme. Have the wedding cake only as dessert and eliminate any other sweets (eclairs, pastries, etc.). Consider a wedding breakfast or brunch (omelettes, muffins, pancakes, French toast), or a tea (a variety of tea flavors, finger sandwiches, scones and jams, etc.) to save money. The more tiers and decorations your cake has the more expensive it will be. Buy your own drink it will work out a lot cheaper then paying the caterers or venues prices. Photos: Compare hourly fees and package deals to see which is more cost-effective for you. Give disposable cameras as wedding favours. Then you can get copies of the days events from family and friends. Have a professional photographer take the formal pictures and shoot the ceremony; have guests take all reception photos. Visit your local college`s photography department and check out some of the students’ portfolios. They will do your photography a lot cheaper and just as good as a professional Ask friends and family to video the big day for you. Flowers: Use flowers that are in season and/or locally grown they’re less expensive than out-of-season flowers that must be shipped to your area. Have bouquet with just a few large flowers, like orchids, tulips, lilies, or sunflowers, tied with a ribbon. If you are marrying at Christmas or Easter, your church may already be decked out beautifully. Arrange to share the cost of ceremony decorations with the couple marrying directly before or after you that day. Use silk or dried flowers instead of fresh ones in table centerpieces. Music: DJs are less expensive than live bands. Ask a family member or friends child to sing at the reception. Hire music for the evening reception only. People are usually to busy chatting to notice any way. Ask at the local college/university for young musicians. Invitations: Send invitations that are light enough when completely assembled to require only a single stamp for mailing. Make your own invitation cards. They are cheaper and more personal. If you are having a themed wedding make cards to do with the theme. Transportation: Limousines are cheap enough to hire for an hour. Find out in advance how long the ceremony will take. Only hire a limo for the bride and groom; have attendants driven in relatives’ cars, or have them drive themselves in groups. You might be able to hire a horse and carriage for just as less. Check the Yellow pages for any in your area. We hope these are of some use to you. Think Your Way to Weight Loss

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Charles Lewis Obviously sitting in a room and thinking about weight loss will not make you lose weight (unless you sit in the room for a few weeks without eating). However, we all know that the brain is the most powerful muscle in the body, so use your brain to think your way to weight loss. Albert Einstein once said that “The thinking that got us into our problems is not the thinking that will get us out.” Einstein was right, although I don’t think Albert Einstein was referring to weight loss. He was making that point that to make a change, you must change your way of thinking, and that concept certainly applies if you are trying to lose weight. Here’s an example of how we can use our brain to think our way to weight loss: start thinking about what you eat. Before you eat that fast food meal of a hamburger, fries, and a milkshake, think about what you are doing. Think about the calories you are consuming, and realize that those calories have very little nutritional value. Think about what other more healthy options you have for your meal. Think about why you want to lose weight. If you want to lose weight for your health, or your appearance, or your physical fitness, your brain can provide you with the added motivation to lose weight. Think about exercise as a way to lose weight. Research why exercise helps you burn more calories and get fit, which turns your body into a fat burning, weight loss machine. There is one certain fact when it comes to weight loss: if you don’t change the way you think about food and exercise, you won’t lose weight. It’s that simple. So focus on your brain, not your stomach, and get started on your weight loss plan today. As a weight loss success story, Charles Lewis writes about how to lose weight permanently without fads or gimmicks. Computer Programming Schools Impart Vital Skills

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By Michael Bustamante Computer programming schools prepare students to understand programming languages, and to create, modify, and test computer software programs in development. Students in learn to write programs using sets of codes of instructions in machine-readable formats, and to modify programs already in existence to produce more desirable results. The type of computer application to be created will determine the languages to be used in any given project. Students may learn all or some of the many programming languages in, such as VB, Net, C++, Java, Perl, Oracle or dBase. Students may also find opportunities to learn languages not yet fully developed. A detailed understanding of software languages will be required of students before undertaking project development. Preparation for a career in computer programming will begin with a quality computer education and a good computer school, where students will work with components of software applications to be integrated into final programs. Computer programming courses may involve testing programs, diagnosing problems, and finding and correcting inaccuracies. Students might also learn documentation programs, write user manuals, or develop help screens. Handmade Books

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By Rondi Davis A great way to encourage reading Before you start, gather together: 2- 5 x 7 pieces of mat board 2-8 1/2 x 11 pieces of decorative paper (scrap book papers or wall paper scraps work well) White glue Several sheets of 8 1/2 x 11-inch card stock One shoelace or piece of ribbon Hole punch Drill Your kids imagination Directions 1. To house a collection of my kids stories, we made our own books. Cut the mat board into two 5 x 7-inch pieces. Place each piece of mat board in the center of your decorative paper. 2. Wrap the edges of the paper around the mat board. The ends will almost meet in the middle. Repeat this process so you have two pieces of 5 x 7-inch mat board covered with your decorative paper. (Much like wrapping a small package.) Glue the folded edges in place. These will serve as the front and back cover of your book. 3. Cut the card stock into ten 5 x 7-inch sheets. Stack the sheets and place them horizontally in front of you. Punch two holes, a half-inch from the left-hand side. The holes should be spaced 2-inches apart. Drill corresponding holes in the two covers. 4. Place the paper between the front and back covers so the holes align. Thread the shoelace through the holes. Leave enough slack in the laces for the pages to open and lie flat on the table. Tie a knot. 5. Have your kids write and illustrate their own story. Younger children may want to dictate their story to you. Then let them do the illustrations. 6. Create several books and start your own library. Add a sign-out sheet in the front of each book so that the children can lend their books to friends. They will love checking out each others books to read, and its even more fun to see who has read theirs. Transferring Assets to Your Trust Takes Paperwork

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Phil Craig Let’s review the question by the widow whose husband recently passed away. Now that he has died, she has learned that there were some assets that he owned that were never placed into the trust’s ownership. Those of you who have taken my free online Multi-Media course know that probate is a court process used to pass title to assets we own at the time of our death. The way a trust avoids probate is by taking title of your assets out of your name individually and placing the assets into the title of the trustee of your trust. The trust instrument then contains language that describes who takes over as trustee when you pass away. In order for a revocable living trust to work and avoid probate, you have to transfer title to your assets to the trustee of the revocable living trust. Failing to keep assets in the title of the revocable living trust was one of the biggest mistakes I came across in my legal career. People would set up a revocable living trust, years would pass by (with them buying and selling assets), and they would get sloppy and not put title to their new assets into the revocable living trust. Only after a death occurred did we learn that they had been sloppy in the titling of their assets. Can this be fixed after death? Sometimes, but that is the topic of another article. For this article, let’s focus on the point that a revocable living trust will work only on those assets that you give it. To get the most out of your revocable living trust, you should review your assets with your professional advisor to make sure you are holding title in the correct way. Usually, it will be as follows: John Smith and Jane Smith, trustees of the Smith Revocable Trust, dated January 1, 2005. Good luck and until next time, Phil Craig P.S. It’s Not Hard To Say Sorry

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

By Emily Johnson Very few people actually have the courage to say sorry. Actually, its not about the sense of etiquette and manners but one really needs to be courageous to say sorry. And when it comes to the love relationships, then it almost becomes an ordeal to say sorry to your sweetheart. Perhaps it was not your fault but in spite of that often your partner is awaiting to hear this sacred word from you. If it is your fault, then make up your mind that you have to say sorry forgetting all your self respect. In fact once you have said sorry, your self respect will be innate in front of your lover. Most of the times we do the stupidest acts and expect others to come and apologize. Our silly ego never let us stoop our heads, whatever the fault is. This is where we are lagging behind from them who does not hesitate to say sorry. While being in love many a stupid things happen. We forget our anniversaries, birth dates of our partners, forget their favorite food and perfume, their favorite color, we forget to reach at time on date, we often say loads of gibberish to them and expect a runner applause. Sometimes our stupidity reaches to its height and we behave utterly nonsense in case of eulogizing as well as rectifying their deeds. But we never feel to say sorry to others because of these. We do not find any mistakes done but what actually is been done is the accidental break-ups. Loving somebody is not a hard job but continuing this relationship is a challenge. Small mistakes like these often crate an unexpected disaster and our heart breaks in no time. While rehearsing to say sorry, one should not forget whether he or she really wants to say sorry or doing all these only in order to impress their partners. If you really feel sorry then only try these following tips: 1.Call her up and say that you are really sorry. Do this as soon as possible. When the problem is just been created, the wound is very fresh so he or she will not take much time to recover from it if you have said sorry very early. 2.If your partner is immensely angry and not picking your phone call, then send her flowers and chocolates, other gifts which might remind him or her about the nicest things you have done together. Add a note writing you are sorry. 3.If you have time and really want to do something that he or she will never forget, pick up a camera and take some snaps showing how sorry you feel without her. You can even create a video. This will surely confirm him or her, how much you miss him or her. 4.Cook his or her favorite dishes if you can. If not then take him or her to a good place and arrange a great treat. Give a sorry greeting card. 5.Finally hold her hand and say sorry. Hug her. If she hugs you back, you are out of danger and safe. Because she has finally forgotten you.
